Living & Dining
Cohesive Great Room
The Problem...
A young couple living in Rochester Hills were unhappy with their living room and dining room space, feeling like they didn’t truly reflect their taste, personality, or lifestyle. So, they came to Horizon Interior Design for help!
- the Before -
Like most projects it isn't pretty, but it's a start!
The space felt a bit dark and as the family described - bland. It was time to take this drab before into a colorful AFTER. They needed more seating, more color, and more personality. So I waved my magic wand and ta-da! The reveal below.
After
They wanted new furnishings and décor that matched their taste and would feel more inviting for friends and family, allowing them to host holiday gatherings comfortably. Another issue they had was unused space at the end of their room, which they weren’t sure what to do with, and a severe lack of storage space and spots to display their collection of décor and photos.
The Solution
the Vibe
We needed to nail down the look and feel of the project.
The kitchen was closed off from the living room and felt dark. They didn't like the fireplace or the flooring, as it wasn't a consistent material throughout the main level. So we removed the wall to open things up and added a beam support to bear the load. The kitchen was reconfigured to maximize storage with an oversized island to allow seating for more people.
After
It was important to carry the mid-century theme into the dining room. This is an open concept plan so great sight lines, but also means, making sure the two spaces are cohesive. It was easy to repeat the color palette into the custom drapes, midcentury modern seating, and gorgeous pin dining table. They wanted a clean look, but you can always style it up with tableware. Layered dishes add a pop of color. And the gorgeous chandelier adds that bit of sparkle every room needs.
Dining Room
- Before & After -
Take a look at the beginning and end result.
They decided to move forward with the Midcentury modern plan, swapping a few items for ones on the other board, and a list of products was provided for their approval. Photorealistic renders showing their selected products in their room provided the reassurance they wanted and they were so excited to see the room come to life. Since they were in-person / full-service clients, I handled the product sourcing, ordering, tracking, delivery, final installation, and styling.
Drawn to the simplicity of mid-century modern design, we added lovely pops of color into the space with a bright rug, chairs, and pillows. We also added a beautiful set of bookcases with closed storage to flank the fireplace and add more display space. We also added an extension dining table, sectional, and accent chairs to accommodate large family gatherings. Now the space perfectly mirrored this couple and their tastes.
